Nannie Helen Burroughs Advocate and Businesswoman

Nannie Helen Burroughs founded what was at the time the largest black women’s organization in the United States and, with the organization’s sponsorship, founded a school for girls and women. She was a strong advocate for racial pride.  Educator and activist, she lived from  May 2, 1879, to May 20, 1961.   Background and Family Nannie Burroughs was born in north-central Virginia, in Orange, located in the Piedmont region. Her father, John Burroughs, was a farmer who was also a Baptist preacher.  When Nannie was only four, her mother took her to live in Washington, DC, where her mother, Jennie Poindexter Burroughs, worked as a cook. Education Burroughs graduated with honors from the Colored High School in Washington, DC, in 1896. She had studied business and domestic science.   Because of her race, she could not get a job in the DC schools or the federal government.  She went to work in Philadelphia as a secretary for the National Baptist Convention’s paper, the Christian Banner, working for the Rev. Lewis Jordan.  She moved from that position to one with the Foreign Mission Board of the convention. When the organization moved to Louisville, Kentucky, in 1900, she moved there. Womans Convention In 1900 she was part of founding the Woman’s Convention, a women’s auxiliary of the National Baptist Convention, focused on service work at home and abroad. She had given a talk at the 1900 annual meeting of the NBC, â€Å"How Sisters Are Hindered From Helping,† which had helped inspire the founding of the women’s organization. She was the corresponding secretary of the Woman’s Convention for 48 years, and in that position, helped recruit a membership which, by 1907, was 1.5 million, organized within local churches, districts, and states.  In 1905, at the First Baptist World Alliance meeting in London, she delivered a speech called â€Å"Women’s Part in the World’s Work.† In 1912, she began a magazine called the Worker for those doing missionary work.  It died out and then the women’s auxiliary of the Southern Baptist Convention—a white organization—helped bring it back in 1934. National School for Women and Girls In 1909, Nannie Burroughs’ proposal to have the Woman’s Convention of the National Baptist Convention found a school for girls came to fruition.  The National Training School for Women and Girls opened in Washington, DC, in Lincoln Heights.  Burroughs moved to DC to be president of the school, a position in which she served until she died.  The money was raised primarily from black women, with some help from a white women’s Baptist mission society. The school, though sponsored by the Baptist organizations, chose to remain open to women and girls of any religious faith, and did not include the word Baptist in its title.  But it did have a strong religious foundation, with Burrough’s self-help â€Å"creed† stressing the three Bs, Bible, bath, and broom: â€Å"clean life, clean body, clean house.† The school included both a seminary and a trade school. The seminary ran from seventh grade through high school and then into a two-year junior college and a two-year normal school to train teachers. While the school stressed a future of employment as maids and laundry workers, the girls and women were expected to become strong, independent and pious, financially self-sufficient, and proud of their black heritage. A â€Å"Negro History† course was required. The school found itself in conflict over control of the school with the National Convention, and the National Convention removed its support. The school temporarily closed from 1935 to 1938 for financial reasons. In 1938, the National Convention, having gone through its own internal divisions in 1915, broke with the school and urged the women’s convention to do so, but the women’s organization disagreed. The National Convention then tried to remove Burroughs from her position with the Woman’s Convention.  The school made the Woman’s Convention owner of its property and, after a fund-raising campaign, reopened.  In 1947 the National Baptist Convention formally supported the school again. And in 1948, Burroughs was elected as president, having served as corresponding secretary since 1900. Other Activities Burroughs helped to found the National Association of Colored Women (NACW) in 1896. Burroughs spoke against lynching and for civil rights, leading to her being placed on a U.S. government watch list in 1917.  She chaired the National Association of Colored Women’s Anti-Lynching Committee and was a regional president of the NACW. She denounced President Woodrow Wilson for not dealing with lynching. Burroughs supported women’s suffrage and saw the vote for black women as essential for their freedom from both racial and sex discrimination. Burroughs was active in the NAACP, serving in the 1940s as a vice president. She also organized the school to make the home of Frederick Douglass into a memorial for that leader’s life and work. Burroughs was active in the Republican Party, the party of Abraham Lincoln, for many years. She helped found the National League of Republican Colored Women in 1924, and often traveled to speak for the Republican Party. Herbert Hoover appointed her in 1932 to report on housing for African Americans. She remained active in the Republican Party during the Roosevelt years when many African Americans were changing their allegiance, at least in the North, to the Democratic Party. Burroughs died in Washington, DC, in May, 1961. Legacy The school which Nannie Helen Burroughs had founded and led for so many years renamed itself for her in 1964.  The school was named a National Historic Landmark in 1991.

International Involvement Several significant events took place from 1890-1905 that involved the United States, particularly the United States becoming more involved in international affairs. The United States has been a major player in world affairs over the last two centuries. In the years following its War of Independence, its policies tended to be isolationist, but over the centuries it has transformed, mainly by trade and economic imperatives, into a superpower that exerts military, economic and cultural domination over much of the rest of the world. Treaty of Paris 1898 The first meeting for the Treaty of Paris occurred on October 1, 1898 when officials from Spain and the United States congregated in Paris, France. The intent of the meeting was to generate an agreement, or treaty that would put an end to a war, also known as the Spanish American War. The American officials present at the meeting were the Honorable Whitelaw Reid, Senators George Gray, William Frye and William Day (Library of Congress, 2010). The outcome of the meeting resulted in Spain receiving 20 million dollars from the United States in exchange for possession of the Philippines. Along with the Philippines being placed under American control, the United States also gained power over Guam and Puerto Rico. The meetings took place over a nine day period and the Treaty of Paris was finalized and signed on December 10, 1898 (Library of Congress, 2010). Venezuelan Boundary Dispute 1895-1899 Although most may relate the Venezuelan Boundary Dispute to December 17, 1895, when the United States president at the time Grover Cleveland submitted a letter to Congress practically declaring war on Venezuela, the Dispute essentially initiated in 1841 when Venezuelan officials claimed British military was approaching Venezuelan land with intention of taking possession. The main reason for this was in 1814 Great Britain gained control of Guyana by signing a treaty with the Netherlands without a definite western boundary (Pike, 2010). In result, the British hired a man named Robert Schomburgk, who was a well-known and well respected surveyor, to clarify how far the boundary of the land that the British owned. The survey that Robert Schomburgk conducted in 1835 resulted in an additional 30,000 square miles of ownership for the British (Pike, 2010). This additional territory was later named the Schomburgk Line. However, Venezuela argued the results of the survey in 1841 and claimed that its borders extended as far east as the Essequibo River, which meant that Venezuela was claiming nearly two-thirds of British territory. Years later after gold was discovered in the Schomburgk Line by Britain, Venezuela contested the ownership of the area in 1876, and asked the United States for assistance in the matter, referring to the Monroe Doctrine as rationalization for United States involvement. The Monroe Doctrine (referring to former United States President James Monroe) stated if European countries attempt to unfairly overtake land the United States would view the action as a requirement for United States military involvement (Yale Law School, 2008). The request for United States involvement continued for the next 19 years, but received little response from the United States. The United States finally became involved in 1895 when Secretary of State Richard Olney delivered a letter to British Prime Minister Lord Salisbury, ordering the British settle in court the boundary dispute. Lord Salisbury responded by arguing that the Monroe Doctrine did not apply throughout the world. In December 1895, President Grover found the Prime Minister’s response unacceptable and requested Congressional approval for a boundary commission, which would serve as a â€Å"final deciding panel,† and requested that the United States do whatever is necessary to enforce the findings of the commission (Pike, 2010). Congress agreed to do so and rumors of War with Britain began to erupt in United States newspapers throughout the country. Once rumors of War circulated in Great Britain Lord Salisbury eventually agreed and submitted his argument of the land to the appointed panel and did not mention anything else of the Monroe Doctrine. Venezuela submitted its dispute as well with the confidence of the outcome favoring Venezuela. Then on October 3, 1899 the panel decided in favor of Great Britain and the Schomburgk Line (Pike, 2010). Although Venezuela was disappointed in the decision and did not necessarily agree with the decision, it did not appeal and, more important, revealed to the world that the United States possessed power throughout the world. Conclusion As previously stated, several significant events occurred from 1890-1905, but more important, the events that took place before and after that time have lso affected the current power status of the United States military and how the world views the United States as a nation. Some soldiers are killed while others survive, haunted with the memories of the gruesome events they have witnessed. When Wilfred Owen wrote â€Å"Dulce et Decorum Est,† she captured the feelings and visions of a solider who watches a fellow solider die on the battlefield. Through Owen’s use of imagery, rhyme, and figures of speech, she communicates her theme that war is not just glory it is also gory. The name Dulce et Decorum Est means it is sweet and right to die for your country. As the narrator begins her story about a fallen solider, she portrays the setting with the use of rhyme and similes. She tells her listener, â€Å"Bent Double like old beggars under sacks, knock-kneed , coughing like hags, we cursed through sludge, till on the haunting flares we turned our backs, And towards our distant rest began to trudge†. The phrases like old beggars and coughing like hags creates images of the physical condition of the soldiers. Trudging indicates that the soldiers were moving through thick mud with great difficulty. We were attacked by terrorist. Hundred’s of innocent people died on that day for no apparent reason. The terrorist had expected to shatter our defenses, yet all their attempt fell short. Americans united like never before. Some people ran home to their family and friends while others fell to their knees with prayer for answers. For the past year we have searched for revenge against our enemies who were accountable for that day. Today, as our search nears an end, we are faced with the threat of war. Many friends and family members have been deported overseas to fight for our country and our freedom. War is a deeply moving and unsettling thought. Some soldiers are killed while others survive, haunted with the memories of the gruesome events they have witnessed. When Wilfred Owen wrote â€Å"Dulce et Decorum Est,† she captured the feelings and visions of a solider who watches a fellow solider die on the battlefield. Through Owen’s use of imagery, rhyme, and figures of speech, she communicates her theme that war is not just glory it is also gory. The name Dulce et Decorum Est means it is sweet and right to die for your country. As the narrator begins her story about a fallen solider, she portrays the setting with the use of rhyme and similes. She tells her listener, â€Å"Bent Double like old beggars under sacks, knock-kneed , coughing like hags, we cursed through sludge, till on the haunting flares we turned our backs, And towards our distant rest began to trudge†. The phrases like old beggars and coughing like hags creates images of the physical condition of the soldiers. Trudging indicates that the soldiers were moving through thick mud with great difficulty. The soldiers may be moving away from the battlefield in order to revive themselves from exhaustion. In the last four lines of the stanza, she continues to paint the tainted picture of the sold...

What Is the W Visa Program Question: What Is the W Visa Program? Answer: One of the most contentious issues during the U.S. Senate’s debate over comprehensive immigration reform was the dispute over a W visa program, a new classification that would allow lower skilled foreign laborers to work temporarily in the country. The W visa, in effect, creates a guest-worker program that would apply to lower-wage workers, including housekeepers, landscapers, retail workers, restaurant staff and some construction workers. The Senate’s Gang of Eight settled on a temporary worker plan that was a compromise between Democratic and Republican lawmakers, industry leaders and labor unions. Under the proposal for the W visa program, which likely would start in 2015, foreign workers with lesser skills would be able to apply for jobs in the United States. The program would be based on a system of registered employers who would apply to the government for participation. Upon acceptance, the employers would be permitted to hire a specific number of W visa workers each year. The employers would be required to advertise their open positions for a period of time to give U.S. workers a chance to apply for the openings. Businesses would be prohibited from advertising positions that require a bachelor’s degree or higher degrees. The spouse and minor children of the W visa-holder is allowed to accompany or follow to join the worker and can receive work authorization for the same period. The W visa program calls for the creation of a Bureau of Immigration and Labor Market Research that will operate under U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services in the Department of Homeland Security. The bureau’s role is to help determine the numbers for the annual cap of new worker visas and identify shortages of labor. The bureau also will help develop labor recruiting methods for businesses and report to Congress on how the program is doing. Much of the dispute in Congress over the W visa grew out of the unions’ determination to protect wages and prevent abuses, and business leaders’ determination to keep regulations to a minimum. The Senate’s legislation wound up containing protections for whistleblowers and guidelines for wages that guarded against sub-minimum pay. According to the bill, S. 744, the wages to be paid â€Å"will be either the actual wage paid by the employer to other employees with similar experience and qualification or the prevailing wage level for the occupational classification in the geographic metropolitan statistical area whichever is higher.† The U.S. Chamber of Commerce gave its blessing to the plan, believing the system for bringing in temporary workers would be good for business and good for the U.S. economy. The chamber said in a statement: â€Å"The new W-Visa classification features a streamlined process for employers to register job openings that can be filled by temporary foreign workers, while still ensuring that American workers get first crack at every job and that wages paid are the greater of actual or prevailing wage levels.† The number of W visas offered would be capped at 20,000 the first year and increase to 75,000 for the fourth year, under the Senate’s plan. The bill establishes a guest worker program for lower-skilled workers that ensures our future flow of workers is manageable, traceable, fair to American workers, and in line with our economy’s needs, said Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla. The modernization of our visa programs will ensure people who want to come legally – and who our economy needs to come legally – can do so.

Thuc at his early ages was a man of passion as sings of Kieu’s beauty from the moment he saw her. He made it his initiative to persuade and make her fall in love with him for which he accomplished (Nguyen, pp.69). He first saw Kieu in the brothel at her place of work and where Thuc was a manager. They went on to see each other on many instances and their relationship looked to be more intimate than being casual. Visible closeness existed between the two that portrayed to true lovers. Thuc expressed his emotions to Kieu who answered back by professing her love to him. Nevertheless, Kieu’s current and past job was a stumbling block as she knew it could not be ignored. Thuc was a married man and this was a challenge to their relationship with Kieu as they could not get into a union of marriage. It also barred them from carrying out their relationship outside the brothel. Kiev talked about the wife of Thuc, "But if the lady lords over you, I shall be toss ed to her, your lioness" This did not shake Thuc as their situations that grew worse rather made them stronger in love. The character of Thuc makes a turn at this juncture when what he feels for Kieu makes him liberate move away form the brothel. Thuc does this by paying Dame Tu, madam at the brothel which showed that he held to his words by honoring his promise. Kiev and Thuc continued in their relationship as married partners with Thuc looking after his wife and life became enjoyable. This is contrary to one’s expectation of an affair between a man who was frequent in brothels and a prostitute. One’s expectation may be that the two would at one time renounce the life they live and turn into a new leaf. Nevertheless, their relationship looked so comfortable and normal that there could be an end. The character of Thuc transforms to man of good deeds and one may attempt to deliver him from his past sins of prostitution and frequenting brothels. His father who has been a way is responsible for stereotyping the play in this love story of Thuc and Kieu. He warns them that Thuc should take Kieu back to where she worked as a prostitute or judgment awaits them for making a mistake of living together while Thuc was still in another union. At some point in one's life, an event or circumstance removes that shield from both moral and legal guilt, whether in one's own eyes or in the eyes of another. In such a case, innocence is cast off, or innocence can be stolen. Both are true of Macbeth in William Shakespeare's tragic work Macbeth. The hero's innocence and naà ¯vetà © make him vulnerable prey for those who feel completely at home in a subhuman realm of malice and disintegration - the witches and Lady Macbeth. Inevitably, Macbeth is eventually worn down enough to be pushed into this dark and evil abyss by his wife, Lady Macbeth, who leaps frantically in after him to join the witches where they are most at home. The robbery of Macbeth's innocence begins with allowing the witches to brainwash him with their predictions forcing him to step closer and closer to the edge of their dismal abyss. They take advantage of the surplus of ambition that had served him so well in his desire for victory over Macdonwald and use it to instill in him the need to be King. Still, desire is not enough for Macbeth and he is thus driven "to seek certainty as his one objective. He wants certainty from the witches . . . at whatever cost" (Campbell 228). Macbeth, however, is not completely lost yet; honour and justice remain in him, and although it takes him some time to fully consider the consequences of the witches' words on him, he rejects his horrible thoughts of murder and postpones all action: "If chance will have me king, why,chance may crown me, / Without my stir" (I. iii.143-144). For the time being, Macbeth's true essence is in control, that of loyalty and honour. However, Macbeth again undergoes a change of heart in scene four, at the announcement of Malcolm as the Prince of Cumberland and as successor to the throne of Scotland, the same throne upon which Macbeth had his eyes set upon. The effect of the King's proclamation on him can be seen through his reaction: The Prince of Cumberland! that is a step, On which I must fall down, or else o'er-leap, For in my way it lies. Family planning sometimes used as a synonym for the use of birth control, most usually applied to a female-male couple who wish to limit the number of children they have and or to control the timing of pregnancy.Family planning services are defined as educational, comprehensive medical or social activities which enable individuals, including minors to determine freely the number, spacing of their children and to select the means by which this may be achiev ed (Royce R. A, 2006) There is no doubting the fact that in today’s reality, raising quality children requires significant amount of resources: time, social, financial and environmental planning can help assure that resources are available else, it would be another potential additional threat to the parent and society at large.This is the essence of family planning (Paine et al, 2001) Experts have always insisted that waiting until the mother is at least 18years old before trying to have children improves maternal and child health. Also, if additional children are desired after a child is born; it is healthier for the mother and the child to wait at least 2years after the previous birth before attempting to conceive (but not more than 5years).After a miscarriage or abortion, it is healthier to wait for at least 6 months (Delano G. 1990). Osakue S. O (2010) highlighted that Nigeria being the most populous country in Africa with more than 140 million people also has a high annu al rate of population growth (3. 5%) And a high total fertility rate of 6. 0 live births per women. Additionally, the country has relatively high levels of infant mortality of 104 infant deaths per 1,000 live births.
